*1 Biotechnology-based drug
As contrasted with ordinary drug consisted primarily of low molecular chemicals, this is a drug mass produced by microorganisms and cultured cells.

*2 Immune activatory effect
This is generally meant to be an effect to stimulate and improve the body's natural defence mechanisms. However, it is originally meant to be an effect to recover ailing immunity due to cancer, infection, or disease of autoimmunity or blood.

DRUG DISCOVERY PROJECTS
Project1. eMIP

Development of immunopotentiating protein preparation (biotechnology-based drug *1)

ECI pursues drug discovery project aiming at the use of eMIP (derivative of chemotaxis factor, MIP-1α) as immune activatory effect (*2) generating agent for cancer immunotherapy. Amid a number of patients suffering from anticancer drug side effect, the use of own immunity improving eMIP enables cancer therapy with minimal side effect.

emip説明図

ECI301 is originated from protein residing inside human body, and affects particular white blood cells to produce an effect so that a therapy with minimal side effect should become possible. To this extent, ECI301 is much different from chemotherapy affecting toxicity on fast breeding normal cells such as white blood cells.

This protein is known to improve body's ability to cure cancer when it was injected intravenously. The phenomenon is assumed to be an enhancement of white blood cells (effector cells), moved to the diseased site and activated by the effect of this chemotaxis factor. As a result of testing, it becomes clear that its effect by ECI301 should be greatly increased when cancer side is inflamed.

Thus ECI has continued the research for combinational effect of ECI301 and radiation. The animal trial up to now has shown the fact that ECI301 is effective not only on irradiated cancer site but also inhibitive for remote and non-irradiated cancer. This indicated that ECI301 has inhibitive effect for metastatic cancer.

GMP level (manufacturing and quality control standard for medical product) protein preparation manufacturing was completed in September 2008. IND application in the US where huge potential market exists is now being prepared.
